Nepotism Discussion

This past week in class we discussed the topic of nepotism babies. We began the discussion by explaining what a nepotism baby is and each classmate’s perception of what a nepotism baby is. We primarily discussed nepotism babies in the entertainment industry but said how they can be in any aspect of life. Donald Trump is a nepotism baby in business, for example. Some may argue that royal families are just nepotism babies, I’m not sure I agree in that aspect of the conversation.

Within the entertainment industry it seems like most of the prominent celebrities are nepotism babies. Some notable nepotism babies include Timothee Chalmet, Maude Apatow, Kaia Gerber, Paris Hilton, George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, Gracie Abrams, Robert Downey Jr., and Ben Platt. This list covers prominent actors, singers, directors, models, and more.

During this discussion, many people expressed their dislike for Hailey Bieber. Hailey is the daughter of Alec Baldwin, a famous actor, comedian, and producer. At the age of 21 Hailey married singer Justin Beiber. Many students in our class did not know why she was famous besides marrying Justin. Others felt a dislike for her due to the recent controversy with Selena Gomez.

Later, we did a deeper dive into Paris Hilton and Maude Apatow. One of the most interesting points I believe was one student thinking these women are viewed differently because of the roles they play, they believed the audiences were not separating the person from the character. Paris, originally playing the persona of eccentric party girl, and Maude, playing sweetheart Lexi on HBO’s Euphoria. One student commented that Maude’s on-screen sister was not getting the same positive press because her character was a bit more wild.

It was also discussed that this divide could be due to the time period they each first came into fame. Paris sore into stardom in the early 2000s, where women were heavily sexualized more than today and seen as less valuable than men. Maude made her big break in the 2020s, while there is still a divide between men and women, women have made serious improvements in how they are viewed.

Finally it was discussed that if the media would review these women unbiasedly, how would the audiences feel about them. Many people felt they would favor Paris more than Maude because she has more of an exciting personality. Another commented they feel the media gives too much power to celebrities and unbiased coverage could lessen that. While there were many different thoughts and feelings during the discussion, that was one opinion we could all agree on.
